Auckland FC Head to Jeddah as Underdogs Against Al-Ahli in FIFA Intercontinental Cup
Auckland FC travel to King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah on 27 August (6am NZT) to face Al-Ahli Saudi FC in the first round of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
The match is a straight knockout, with the winner advancing to play CAF representative Mamelodi Sundowns in the African-Asian-Pacific Cup.
The Black Knights qualified by winning the inaugural OFC Pro League with their reserve team, earning Oceania confederation status and a place in a competition that brings together club champions from all six FIFA confederations.
Reigning UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain are waiting at the end of the bracket for any side that can navigate the earlier rounds.
Coach Pedro Moreira acknowledged the scale of the challenge.
Reporting from the New Zealand Herald, the Portuguese coach said his team understood there was a significant gap between the two sides, but insisted Auckland FC had earned their place and would compete for the full 90 minutes.
He said the match was an opportunity to show how the club works and to put their training and game plan into action.
A Squad in Transition
This is Auckland FC's first competitive fixture since claiming the A-League grand final in May. Pre-season preparation included friendlies against East Coast Bays, Eastern Suburbs, and Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur at Eden Park, a match Auckland lost 2-0.
The squad has seen movement. Defenders Dan Hall and Guillermo May, winger Jesse Randall, and Louis Verstrate have departed, while Lachlan Bayliss, Aaron Calver, and Aaron Cartwright have arrived from across the Tasman.
Several players have been promoted from Auckland's OFC Pro League side, among them midfielder Daniel Normann.
It is also Moreira's first competitive match as head coach, having been in charge for less than a month.
Al-Ahli's Formidable Lineup
Al-Ahli are two-time defending AFC Champions League Elite winners, with their back-to-back continental titles earning them consecutive Intercontinental Cup berths.
The Saudi club have started the domestic season sharply, defeating Diriyah and Abha in the Pro League, and progressing in the King Cup of Champions.
Their squad includes several players with FIFA World Cup experience: Ivan Toney (England), Edouard Mendy (Senegal), and Roger Ibañez (Brazil) all featured at the 2026 tournament. Portuguese forward Francisco Trincão is another recognised name.
Moreira singled out Ibañez and Trincão as threats Auckland will need to manage carefully.
Normann Confident Despite the Odds
Normann, recently elevated from the OFC Pro League side to the A-League squad, was direct about the situation when speaking to the New Zealand Herald.
He acknowledged Al-Ahli were likely favourites but pointed to Auckland's status as Oceania champions as reason to back themselves. He ended simply: the Black Knights intend to win.
Captain Hiroki Sakai brings international pedigree, with experience across 12 seasons covering spells in Japan, Germany, France, and back in Japan with Urawa Red Diamonds.
Midfielder Cam Howieson has history at the very venue, having played there for Auckland City in a 2023 FIFA Club World Cup match against Al-Ittihad.
