Marley Leuluai Joins Auckland FC on Scholarship After Catching Eye Against Spurs
Auckland FC have confirmed the signing of 19-year-old defensive midfielder Marley Leuluai to a scholarship deal, as reported by RNZ Sport, following several months on trial with the A-League champions.
The deal was announced on 16 September, with the club's title defence kicking off against Melbourne City at Go Media Stadium on 17 October.
Leuluai was born in Sydney and has spent most of his life in England.
He began his youth career at Blackburn Rovers before spending five years in the Manchester City academy, and then signed his first professional contract with Burnley in 2023, where he made 14 appearances in the Premier League 2 competition across their Under-21s and reserve sides.
How Leuluai Caught Auckland FC's Attention
His trial period included minutes off the bench in Auckland FC's 2-0 pre-season defeat to Tottenham Hotspur and an appearance in the club's opening warm-up match against East Coast Bays.
He made an immediate impression against Spurs with a sliding tackle on Brazilian international Richarlison, which the NZ Herald reported drew attention from fans. Leuluai also captained New Zealand at the 2023 FIFA U17 World Cup.
Auckland FC director of football Terry McFlynn said, via the club's official announcement, that the signing reflected the club's focus on developing domestic talent.
McFlynn described Leuluai as someone who had shown determination throughout his time at top academies, and said the club expected fans to appreciate the potential he carries.
Leuluai said he was thrilled to get started and described the Tottenham match as a dream he had already lived, adding he was keen to create further memorable moments with the club.
The Leuluai Family's Rugby League Legacy
The Leuluai name carries serious weight in New Zealand rugby league. According to the NZ Herald, Marley's father Kylie Leuluai played 336 career games, including 258 for the Leeds Rhinos, and is regarded as a Kiwi-Samoan league legend.
His cousin is former Kiwis playmaker Thomas Leuluai, and his uncle James Leuluai also represented New Zealand internationally.
Marley has taken a different path, with football his focus throughout, and the slide tackle on Richarlison has already given him a moment that resonates with a new audience.
Auckland FC's Broader Squad Rebuild
The Leuluai signing is part of a wider squad overhaul as Auckland FC prepare to defend their A-League title.
The NZ Herald reported that the club have brought in Lachlan Bayliss, Aaron Calver, and Aaron Cartwright, while Daniel Norman and Ronan Wynne have been promoted from the OFC Pro League squad.
Grand final scorer Cam Howieson has signed a two-year extension, and Chilean midfielder Felipe Gallegos has also committed for another season. Goalkeeper Michael Woud, part of the All Whites' World Cup squad, signed an extension on undisclosed terms.
Jonty Bidois and Oliver Middleton, previously on scholarships, have both been upgraded to full first-team contracts.
The club confirmed 10,000 tickets had been sold ahead of the October 17 opener.
