New Zealand Fields First Women's Under-21 Rugby Team for October Trans-Tasman Test
New Zealand and Australia will meet in a historic women's under-21 rugby fixture at One New Zealand Stadium in Christchurch on 31 October, according to allblacks.com.
It marks the first time either nation has assembled a national women's age-grade team for an international fifteens match.
New Zealand Rugby (NZR) and Rugby Australia jointly announced the fixture.
The New Zealand Under-21 side will face Australia's NextGen squad in the opening match of a double-header, with the Black Ferns' third Test against France to follow that evening — the final match of the 2026 WXV Global Series.
A Milestone for Women's Pathways
NZR Head of Women's High Performance Hannah Porter described it as a landmark moment for the women and girls' pathway.
She said it will be the first time an age-grade women's team has represented New Zealand in an international fifteens match, and that it reflects the growth of the women's game in both countries.
NZR Women's High Performance Pathways Manager Kendra Cocksedge went further.
She told allblacks.com that many young women grow up wanting to wear the black jersey, but until now the only routes to do so have been through Sevens, the Black Ferns XV, or the Black Ferns themselves. History has been thin on options.
She said the fixture shows how far the game has come.
The match kicks off at 4:30pm NZT and will be broadcast live and exclusively on Sky.
What the Black Ferns Coach Said
Black Ferns head coach Whitney Hansen, as reported by the New Zealand Herald, backed the initiative as critical to building depth in New Zealand's programme. Hansen said playing alongside peers their own age gives young women vital development opportunities.
Seeing players like themselves in a black jersey, she added, makes the prospect of becoming a Black Fern feel achievable.
Hansen also pointed to the bigger picture. She noted the Lions tour next year and the 2029 Rugby World Cup as targets that make deepening the pathway a priority right now.
Sponsor and Squad Timeline
Telecommunications company 2degrees has signed on as the Official Partner of the New Zealand Women's U21 team, allblacks.com confirmed. The squad will be announced in early October.
The October double-header rounds out a significant year for the Black Ferns. The Christchurch Test against France will be the team's 11th of the season. Earlier home fixtures against France are scheduled in Whangārei and Hamilton as part of the WXV Global Series.
